It was October already, a gloomy, foggy Friday morning. The last few days were still hot, nearly in the eighties, uncommonly warm for the season. There had been a few cool days toward the end of September, but that was all. Jane wanted the weather to hurry and cool off. She always loved the brisk coolness and beauty of Fall.

It began to drizzle, then, soon, it was pelting down. I hope this lets up before tomorrow. It’ll take Jake a lot longer to drive in this weather, she thought.

Oh, how I miss you, sweetheart, she carried on a one sided mental conversation with him. We’ve got to work something out soon. My heart just aches from weekend to weekend. I never knew how much I needed you before, and even if I can’t believe the way you do, I even miss the closeness of our prayer and devotion times. I’m going to tell you I’m sorry when you get here. No matter the reason, I know I’ve acted horrible, but things just fell on me all of a sudden.

As she mentally rehearsed how she would make things right between herself and Jake again, the rain became heavier. Soon the wind picked up, tossing the rockers back and forth on the porch. She ran out and turned them over against the porch wall, and let in the cat and dogs.

Jane called out to the kitchen for Claude to come into the sitting room, and keep her company. He called back, “I’m a comin’ honey. I didn’t know you were in th’ far room.” Claude called it the ‘far’ room, meaning the fire room, because of the big black wood stove in front of the fireplace. The far room sure doesn’t need any far today, she thought chuckling. We need to turn on the air since I’ve closed the windows.

It was a cozy room, containing several odd antique tables and lamps, an old console TV with an attitude, a statical radio, and a lumpy plaid couch and chair. Uncle Claude’s cracked leather recliner took up one corner; his manly throne from which, for many years, he’d read the evening paper and dozed, trusting all was well in his little domain.

Jane gazed around the worn room that she’d spent many an evening in as a girl, sometimes doing homework, or just watching a funny TV program with Claude and Elsie. Her eyes rested upon a portrait of them hanging over the fireplace mantle. It was in an oval frame with a domed glass. They stared solemnly out at her in their wedding finery, so young and sweet faced. Oh, if only Jake and I could always be as happy and contented as they were together, she thought.

The sound of a car pulling into the wet graveled driveway sent Jane flying to the window.

“Uncle Claude, Uncle Claude, Jake’s here!
